Benches in Gløshaugen Sports Field
The benches in the Gløshaugen Sports Field (Dødens dal) were designed and built by 7 students in the autumn 2014.
The main goal was to leave the smallest footprints possible and create something that could easily be moved. The design therefore consist of many separated benches rather than a one large structure. The benches are playfully placed in the landscape, and provide different seating opportunities for both spectators and athletes.
The wood is reused 3×3” pine, connected together with L-profiles of stainless steel, and the foundation is a 16mm threaded steel, which goes 20-30 cm deep in the ground. This steel also holds a washer and a nut that prevents the benches from going deeper into the soil. The benches vary in sizes between 450, 950, 1350 and 1750mm, which was the existing lengths of the beams. The substitute benches use the same materials, with the addition of 16mm translucent plastic plates to protect the players from rain and wind.
